Cape Breton Eagles News Release
BOISBRIAND - The new look Cape Breton Eagles, with four new forwards and a new head coach, started fast and pushed back late, but fell 6-4 to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in their first game of 2022.
It was the Eagles new players making an immediate impact- Charles Savoie crashed the net and was able to push the puck over the line at 5:23 to score in his Eagles debut. Then, under two minutes later, newcomer Peter Repcik drew a hooking penalty on Antoine Roy. At the tail end of the power play, another player in his first Eagle game, Matis Ouellet, scored a simliar goal to Savoie to push the lead for the visitors to 2-0.
Penalty trouble for the Eagles would allow the Armada back into the game. The home side got on the board on a passing play on the man advantage- Alexis Brisson passed it down the boards to Keiran Craig who flipped it across to Oleksiy Myklukha to make it a 2-1 game.
The Eagles killed off two more Armada penalties in the opening frame, but Blainville-Boisbriand was back on the man advantage early in period two. Repcik did some strong work penalty killing, earning a short handed breakway, but was denied and the play went to the other end of the ice. Alexis Brisson finished a cross-crease pass to knot the game at two.
Blainville-Boisbriand carried the balance for the rest of the middle stanza, earning the lead when Colby Huggan surprised Rémi Delafontaine with a shot from the right boards. The advantage was stretched to 4-2 when the Armada attacked on an odd man rush- with a three on two, Huggan dropped the puck to the trailer Zachary Cardinal who picked the top corner. Jonathan Fauchon found space over the shoulder of Rémi Delafontaine before period's end to make it 5-2.
After a frantic pace through most of the first 40 minutes, it was a quiet first half of the final frame. Yet another newcomer would push the Eagles back into the game with under eight minutes to play, when Carter McCluskey spun around and put a shot by Nicholas Sheehan.
Down by two goals, the Eagles were given a big opportunity when Kieran Craig was whistled for boarding Ivan Ivan. New Eagles coach Chadd Cassidy, making his QMJHL debut, elected to use his timeout to try to a diagram a goal to bring his team within one. And it was Ivan who succeded in doing that- ripping a shot from the left faceoff circle through Sheehan to cut the edge to 5-4.
With over two minutes left, Cassidy lifted Delafontaine for an extra attacker. The move would ultimately not pay off, as Myklukha
hit the open goal with just over 80 seconds to play. Delafontaine would get to the bench again and the Eagles generated major pressure in the dying seconds but couldn't get any closer and the Armada claimed victory.
Sheehan stopped 26 of 30 shots in the win, while Delafontaine allowed five goals on 30 shots in addition to the empty netter.
The Eagles will continue their road trip through Quebec tomorrow evening as they take on the Drummondville Voltigeurs. Puck drop is at 5 PM Atlantic time.
