Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Eagles have completed a number of trades as the QMJHL's trading period opened today, including finalizing prior deals, exchanging first round picks, and acquiring a pair of 20 year old players.
The Eagles have acquired defenseman Sean Larochelle (2001-02-11) from the Victoriaville Tigres in exchange for Victoriaville's second round draft pick in 2023. Larochelle was drafted by Victoriaville in the second round in the 2017 QMJHL draft. In his third QMJHL season, he notched 12 points in 26 games along with 8 points in 19 playoff games (with a +11 rating) as part of the Tigres' championship team. In 2019, he attended Toronto Maple Leafs training camp.
Another 20 year old arriving in Cape Breton is forward Nicholas Girouard (2001-05-21). The Eagles acquired Girouard from Saint John along with Halifax's first round pick in 2022. Going to Saint John in return are Saint John's first and second round draft picks in 2023. Girouard was drafted by Drummondville in the second round in the 2017 QMJHL draft. Last year he collected 26 points in 31 games in his third full QMJHL season, his first with Saint John.
Cape Breton has traded its first round draft pick in 2021 (2nd overall) and forward Jacob Santerre (2002-10-18) to the Drummondville Voltigeurs for Saint John's first round pick in 2021 (8th overall), Cape Breton's second round pick in 2021 (22nd overall) and defenseman Conor Shortall (2003-04-29). Santerre was selected in the tenth round of the 2019 QMJHL draft by the Eagles, and recorded two assists in 28 games in his rookie season last year. Shortall was chosen in the fifth round of the 2019 QMJHL draft by Drummondville, and notched 11 points in 34 games as a rookie in 2020-21.
As a result of Mathias Laferrière playing a set number of games for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, the Eagles have returned Bathurst's third round draft pick in 2021 (54th overall) to Blainville-Boisbriand in exchange for Blainville-Boisbriand's second and fourth round draft picks in 2022. Also, because Xavier Ducharme played for the Rimouski Océanic this season, the Eagles will exchange Rimouski's seventh round pick in 2021 (115th overall) in return for Rimouski's sixth round pick in 2021 (97th overall).
The QMJHL's trading period will reopen on Friday night as the league draft kicks off. The first round of the draft will be broadcast on Eastlink Television and the QMJHL's YouTube channel at 7:30 PM Atlantic time. The remainder of the draft will begin on Saturday at 10 AM.
