Colorado Eagles News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska. -The Colorado Eagles (28-14-0-0) couldn't overcome an early deficit as the Eagles fell 5-4 to the Alaska Aces (17-18-3-1) in the first game of a three game series this week at Sullivan Arena.

Alaska forward Olivier Archambault cut down the goal line before feeding linemate Curt Gogol in the top of the crease who beat Eagles netminder Clarke Saunders on the power play to give Alaska the 1-0 lead 2:35 into the contest. With 52 seconds remaining in the period, Taylor Vause dangled around a would-be Aces defenseman before feeding linemate Trent Daavettila who beat Alaska goalie Troy Redmann five-hole to tie the game, 1-1.

Aces forward Brendan Connolly gave Alaska a 2-1 lead after he found himself with the puck alone in front of Saunders 2:01 into the second frame. Alaska forward Justin Brenton came streaking across Saunders' face, who got a piece of the shot, however the puck trickled past to give the Aces the 3-1 edge, 9:20 into the second period. With 3:52 remaining in the stanza, Connolly raced down the ice on a short-handed breakaway, which resulted in the Aces fourth tally of the night, coming over Saunders' blocker. Less than a minute later, Eagles defenseman Mark Nemec launched a shot from the point which was deflected by Eagles forward Chris Knowlton to bring the Eagles within two, 4-2.

The Eagles weren't done, as Kyle Kraemer stole the puck and sniped the puck past Redmann, 11:09 into the third. With 3:05 remaining, Archambault fed Gogol in the slot, who fired a one-timer past Saunders, resulting in a 5-3 Alaska advantage. After a slashing penalty on Alaska, the Eagles cashed in for the first time on the power play after Daavettila tipped a shot from Eagles defenseman Collin Bowman to pull the Eagles within one, 5-4, with 92 seconds remaining.

Despite a strong empty-net attack, the second Daavettila goal would mark the end of the scoring in the contest, leaving the Eagles on the short side of the scoreboard for their first time in 11 games.
