Eagles Fall in Physical Contest Against Wildcats

March 2, 2024 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

The Eagles actually had an opportunity to strike early as Julius Sumpf was penalized just 21 seconds into the game for a check from behind. But Moncton killed off the penalty and perhaps gained some momentum as Grenier opened the scoring at the 2:29 mark with a shot from the blueline. Just over two minutes later, Sumpf found himself alone at the side of the net and pushed home a rebound from a Cooper Cormier shot to double the lead.

The Cape Breton response came from Squires on a nifty feed from Jacob Newcombe, who spun a backhand pass to Squires in front and he made no mistake burying the Eagles first goal of the night. There would be much more activity on the scoresheet starting 40 seconds later after Romeo was penalized along with Moncton's Ales Zielinski being given two minutes for crosschecking.

After a video review, Romeo was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct, but most of the five minutes did not result in a five on four power play thanks to subsequent minor penalties. In addition to Zielinski's penalty, in succession Cape Breton's Brayden Schmitt and Moncton's Alex Mercier took minors, at one point creating a sequence of 55 seconds of three-on-three play.

When it did return to a normal five on four power play late in the opening frame, Mercier cashed in at the side of the net with 12 seconds to play. Moncton took a 3-1 edge to the dressing room after the first siren.

Moncton added to the lead at 5:04 when a Gabe Smith shot went up and over Ruccia, and then more fireworks ensured four minutes later. After Squires was given a minor for high sticking, Hackett charged towards him, MacDonald came to the scene, leading to Hackett removing his gloves to throw punches. Hackett was given a game misconduct as an agressor in addition to five for fighting, while MacDonald was also given a game misconduct. As was the case after the Romeo major was called, the two teams played four on four for two minutes before the Eagles power play began.

And as the Wildcats scored on their major power play, the Eagles scored on theirs- a shot from the left circle from Cole Burbidge. The period finished with a 4-2 score for Moncton.

The third period was a tamer one on the scoresheet but both teams had power play opportunities. However, the only goal came at even strength for the home team. Miles Mueller found himself alone in front of the net, and while Ruccia made the initial save, the puck bounced to his side for Mueller to put over the goal line to give Moncton a 5-2 lead and finishing the scoring.

The Eagles are next in action tomorrow afternoon in Bathurst. Puck drop is 3 PM. The game is available for purchase on https://shorturl.at/fnwJP and you can also hear all the action on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com.
