NOTES FROM THE GAME
- William Shields scored at the 1:24 mark of the opening period to give the Eagles the lead and they wouldn't look back in a 5-1 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders.
- Cam Squires helped pace the Cape Breton attack, extending his scoring streak to seven games with a pair of goals, while Ivan Ivan added a goal & two assists. Jude Campbell also scored the Eagles while Samuel Johnson & Brayden Schmitt also added two assists.
- Jakob Robillard shone in the loss, stopping 48 of 53 shots. Oliver Satny picked up the win, stopping 20 of 21 shots.
- Charlottetown coach Jim Hulton was absent from the bench, serving a one game suspension.
William Shields set the tone early for the Eagles, converting an Antoine Roy pass from behind the net just 1:24 into the game. It helped set the tone for a dominant first period for the Eagles, as they outshot the Islanders 16-4- but despite the shots and two Eagle power plays, the score was just 1-0 after 20 minutes. Charlottetown's best chance wasn't a shot on net, but when Giovanni Morneau rung a high shot off the crossbar. (The Eagles also hit a post later in the opening period.)
The home side would double their lead in the middle period with a spectacular effort from Ivan Ivan, deking through the defense and outwaiting Jakob Robillard to double the edge. The Islanders broke the shutout in the final three minutes of the middle stanza when Keifer Lyons pushed a rebound over the goal line- the puck was available in the blue paint after Owen Hollignsworth hit the crossbar. '
However, the Eagles took the momentum back at the end of the second period on a delayed penalty. The Eagles pulled Oliver Satny for an extra attacker with just over a minute left and almost spent the balance of the period with a six on five advantage. With 1.9 seconds remaining in the period, Satny stayed on the bench- the Eagles won the ensuing faceoff but couldn't add to the lead.
The Eagles didn't score on the power play to start the third period, but firmly took control of the game thanks to Cam Squires. Squires stretched his goal scoring streak to seven games by finishing a Samuel John pass on a two on one, and then pushed the Eagles lead to 4-1 with a breakaway goal. With the result already secured, Eagle forward Jude Campbell found the back of the net on the power play with three seconds left in the period.
