ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (48-34) used the long ball to top the Nashville Sounds (38-46) Sunday night at Dell Diamond, 4-2. The E-Train victory tied the series at one game apiece.
The Sounds orchestrated an attack on Round Rock starter Phil Klein in the top of the second as DH Danay Viciedo got aboard via ground ruled doubled with one out. A soft fly out from 3B Max Muncy put the second out on the scoreboard, but a throwing error from Round Rock LF Joey Gallo moved Viciedo all the way to third. Klein then walked former Express OF Jake Smolinski to put runners on first and third with two outs. Smolinski swiped second with C Carson Blair at the plate and a throwing error from Express C Tomas Telis brought in Viciedo for the 1-0 Nashville lead. Klein finished his outing with a fly out. The Round Rock righty went 2.0 innings with two hits, one run (unearned), one walk and had one strikeout.
Round Rock stormed back in the third as CF Jared Hoying supplied a lead-off double with one out. Gallo delivered three pitches later with a RBI double that scored Hoying from second to tie the contest. Nashville starter Cody Martin then tossed a wild pitch with DH Michael Choice at the plate, advancing Gallo to third. Choice went on to record his 37th RBI of the year with a single to left and gave Round Rock its first lead of the game at 2-1. Telis halted the production with a ground out to bail Martin out of the third. Martin did not last much longer, completing his Nashville debut with 4.1 innings pitched, four hits, two runs (two earned), three walks and five Ks.
LHP Alex Claudio entered for Klein and threw 3.0 shutout innings with one hit, one walk and a season-high five strikeouts. RHP Luke Jackson took over for Claudio in the top of the sixth and gave up a lead-off single to Nashville CF Craig Gentry to start his night. Jackson collected the first out with a strikeout, but another Telis throwing error put Gentry on second. The E-Train right-hander found more trouble by issuing a walk to Nashville SS Ryan Roberts, spurring Express pitching coach Brad Holman to come out to the mound. Jackson's struggles lingered after the talk as he threw his second walk in a row to load the bases for Viciedo. Jackson got out of the inning on a double play that started with a strikeout and finished with the classic 2-5-2-6-3-4-2 put out that eliminated Gentry.
Express 3B Chris Gimenez added to the Round Rock total with his sixth blast of the season and second in two games to extend the E-Train lead to 3-1. The back-to-back occasion marked the first time since May 5th and 6th of 2014 Gimenez had consecutive games with a homer. Nashville reliever RHP Angel Castro gave up a single to 1B Brett Nicholas, but used an inning-ending double play to send the game to the seventh.
Jackson garnered the first out of the seventh, but was unable to keep the hot-hitting Smolinski from ripping his third double of the series. Blair pulled the Sounds within a run on a RBI double that scored Smolinski, making the score 3-2. Round Rock called in Pacific Coast League All-Star Jimmy Reyes to take over for Jackson and the southpaw did so successfully with consecutive strikeouts to end the top of the seventh.
Field provided an insurance run with a lead-off home run in the top of the eighth to put the E-Train up 4-2. Nashville RHP Brock Huntzinger used a line out, fly out and ground out to send the game into the ninth.
Pacific Coast League All-Star Round Rock RHP Jon Edwards regained his proper form by throwing a shutout ninth with two Ks, giving the Express win number 48.
The Express and Sounds continue the series tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Round Rock sends out RHP Jerad Eickhoff (6-3, 4.23) to square off with Nashville LHP Brad Mills (3-8, 3.57). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
