Aces Fall on Record-Setting Night at Aces Ballpark

RENO - A large deficit was too much to overcome for the Reno Aces (@Aces) in a 10-6 loss to the Sacramento River Cats in front of a record-setting crowd of 10,441 Saturday night at Aces Ballpark.

Sacramento jumped on Aces' starter Gabriel Arias and scored in four of the first five innings. A modest 1-0 lead turned in a 5-0 advantage after three innings, and a 7-0 edge after the top of the fourth inning.

Down 7-0, the Aces staged a valiant comeback. It started with a pair of two-run homers in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out in the inning, Nick Evans lined a base hit to center and came around to score on Jamie Romak's two-run blast. It was Romak's 16th of the season and fourth over his last six games.

Following the home run, Todd Glaesmann (@toddglaesmann22) reached on an error and scored when Blake Lalli blasted a two-run, opposite-field shot to cut the deficit to 7-4.

The River Cats came back and got a run in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 8-4. Arias was charged with eight runs on 12 hits in four innings.

It remained 8-4 until the seventh when the Aces put together another rally. Back-to-back singles from Raul Navarro and Garrett Weber (@_weber5) put the Aces in business.

Two batters later, Brandon Drury hit a fly ball to right-field deep enough to allow Navarro to tag from third and score on a sacrifice fly. The throw from right-fielder Mac Williamson went into the Aces dugout and allowed Weber to score from second and make it an 8-6 game.

Sacramento immediately got a run back in the eighth. Left-fielder Jarrett Parker led off the inning with an opposite-field solo homer to up their lead to 9-6.

They added another run in the top of the ninth on Adam Duvall's sacrifice fly. The run was scored by Kelby Tomlinson who reached on a one-out triple - his fifth hit of the night.

River Cats' right-hander Erik Cordier worked the final two innings and kept the Aces off the scoreboard. He earned the save and Clayton Blackburn improved to 3-3 with the win.

Sacramento collected 16 hits in the win, half of which came from Tomlinson (5) and Parker (3). The Aces were led by Evans who was 3-for-4, and Romak who was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Navarro added a multi-hit game as well.

Game two of the four-game series is set for Sunday night. Right-hander Allen Webster (1-2, 9.00) starts for the Aces against left-hander Nik Turley (3-2, 5.45) for the River Cats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
