Adam Conley tossed a rain-shortened, seven-inning shutout, the Zephyrs' second in a row over Iowa, as New Orleans defeated the Cubs on Sunday afternoon, 2-0.
The shutout is the Zephyrs' 13th of the season, equaling the single-season franchise record established in 2011. The Z's have held Iowa scoreless for 23 consecutive innings over their last three meetings.
Conley, who was named the Pacific Coast League's starting pitcher for the Triple-A All-Star Game in 10 days, continued his recent dominance by limiting Iowa to just two hits in seven innings. The left-hander retired the first 11 batters before a Kyle Schwarber two-out single in the fourth, and finished with his second career shutout.
Conley (8-2) struck out seven and walked one to jump into sole possession of second place in the league with his eighth victory. Over his last nine outings, Conley is 5-0 with a 1.43 ERA.
Isaac Galloway gave Conley the only run support he needed by drilling the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth over the left field fence for his third home run of the year.
Conley gave himself an insurance tally later in the inning by ripping a single to left and advancing to third on a wild pitch and a ground out. Conley then tagged and scored on a fly ball to right by Vinny Rottino.
Galloway also doubled in the sixth, giving him five hits over the first two games of the series.
Heavy rain began to fall in the bottom of the seventh, and the game was called with one out following a a 33-minute delay.
Donn Roach (7-2) took the complete game loss for Iowa, yielding two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.
The Zephyrs and I-Cubs play a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 5 p.m.
