Dynamo Fall to Monterrey 2-1 in BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup

HOUSTON - In the 10th anniversary of the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup, Mexican club C.F. Monterrey defeated the Houston Dynamo 2-1 tonight at BBVA Compass Stadium. Los Rayados claimed the trophy, but the winner tonight was the KIPP Opportunity Campus as proceeds from tonight's match will go to benefit the school.

After an even first half, the Dynamo came out of the locker room intent on attacking and pressuring Monterrey. In the 49th minute, midfielder Luis Gil dribbled past the Monterrey defense into the penalty area and fired a shot that was saved by Monterrey goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero, but Barovero spilled the rebound. Defender Conor Donovan beat the 'keeper to the loose ball and tapped it in to score his first goal with the Dynamo.

Monterrey equalized in the 64th minute off a free kick just outside the box. Midfielder Alfonso González, who was fresh off the bench, took the free kick that bent around the wall and snuck just inside the far post, past a diving effort from rookie goalkeeper Michael Nelson, who made his Dynamo debut as a halftime substitute.

Rayados forward Luis Madrigal scored the game-winning goal in second half stoppage time after he flicked a header inside of the far post off of a corner kick.

Forward Mauro Manotas generated one of Houston's best opportunities in the first half, but his shot did not find the back of the net. In the 35th minute, forward Romell Quioto played a ball to Manotas on the left flank and the Colombian dribbled the ball into the box but his attempt was saved.

As the first half was coming to an end, forward Dorlan Pabon tried to give Monterrey the lead going into the locker room, but his shot whistled just over the crossbar.

The Dynamo will continue the 2018 season, fueled by 76?, on Tuesday, July 3 at 8:00 p.m. CDT against Los Angeles FC at BBVA Compass Stadium for the club's annual Honoring Our Heroes night driven by the Houston-Area Ford Dealers.
