Houston Dynamo FC News Release
Justin Meram, Adam Bedell and Aaron Schoenfeld each scored as the Houston Dynamo fell to the Columbus Crew, 3-0, on Saturday at Crew Stadium.
The Dynamo (25 points) trail the New York Red Bulls (31 points) by six points for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Houston is in ninth place, one point back of Chicago, two behind Philadelphia, and five removed from New England with ten games remaining in the regular season.
Houston nearly opened the scoring through Will Bruin in the 18th minute. Bruin intercepted a pass from Wil Trapp in midfield and raced to the top of the box before firing on goal as Columbus goalkeeper Steve Clark charged to the top of the area and slid to make the vital block.
The Crew seized a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. Dynamo defender David Horst lost control of a pass in middle of the field and Meram collected the ball, cut to his left, and buried his chance from 15 yards for a 1-0 lead.
The Dynamo created a scoring chance from a set piece in the 42nd minute. Brad Davis quickly delivered a bending service from the left flank and Horst beat his marker but could not test Clark with a diving header from 12 yards.
Columbus doubled its lead in the 59th minute on a sequence that started with a corner kick. The ball was collected on the opposite side of the field by Meram, who whipped a cross from the sideline toward the front of goal and Bedell fought to head home from six yards for a 2-0 lead.
The Crew capped the scoring five minutes later as Ethan Finlay fed Waylon Francis on the left flank and the Costa Rican defender delivered a good service to the middle of the penalty area where Schoenfeld drove a header inside the near post for the final goal.
The Dynamo travel to face Sporting Kansas City on Friday, Aug. 29 at Sporting Park. Houston will return to BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6 to host the Montreal Impact.
