FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Chivas USA fell, 1-0, Saturday night to the New England Revolution in the clubs' lone meeting of the regular season. The Revs were led to the three-point result at Gillette Stadium on Lee Nguyen's tally early in the second half.
The sides came out looking to get into the attacking third in search of getting on the front foot. Chivas generated their first threat at goal in the 18th minute when right back Akira Kaji sent in a cross from the right side across the box to Eric Avila. The midfielder then headed the entry back toward the penalty spot for striker Felix Borja, who took control of the pass with his back to the net, turned and fired on frame. But Borja's right-footed shot was kept out just in time by Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth with a diving save to his left.
Three minutes later, Kaji played a second cross into the box intended for Erick Torres. The forward, however, could not get off his attempted header cleanly. Torres would get a second look at opening the score in the 41st minute when he took control of the ball on the right side of the box. With a swarm of defenders around him, the striker held possession and created space for himself to get off a shot that was delivered wide of the far post to send the clubs into the half locked at zero.
Midfielder Agustin Pelletieri got into range in the 51st minute after a poor clearance by New England's defense. The Red-and-White center-mid collected the loose ball and fired a clean strike on frame from the edge of the 18-yard box that Shuttleworth was able to collect.
New England were able to take a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute when Kelyn Rowe found Nguyen near the arc for the midfielder to square up to goal and bend his shot inside the left post.
The Rojiblancos looked to respond in search of the equalizer and had a dangerous look in the 65th minute when Borja was left in a one-on-one meeting with Shuttleworth on the right wing. The striker, though, was unable to capitalize on the look, as the Revs keeper secured the threat.
The Red-and-White continued to send numbers forward and nearly leveled the match in the 72nd minute when midfielder Nathan Sturgis connected with Torres inside the box with a diagonal cross from the right wing. With a marker battling him for the ball in the air, Torres got on the end of the pass with a header toward the second post, but Shuttleworth was able to recover and swat the shot away in time, as the 1-0 result would stand in favor of the home side.
Chivas USA now return home to begin preparations to host their cross-hall rival LA Galaxy in the highly anticipated final installment of the SuperClásico on Sunday, Aug. 31. The Angelino derby is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. (PT) at the StubHub Center and will be televised on Univision Deportes Network as well as KDOC-TV LA56. The action can also be heard live on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM. For more information follow the club on Twitter and Facebook.
