Dykxhoorn and Bostick combine to strike out 19 as Grizz beat Bees 7-6 (10) in regular season finale
September 3, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
In the last game of the regular season, the Fresno Grizzlies (82-57) clawed past the Salt Lake Bees (71-68) 7-6 in 10 innings Monday afternoon from Smith's Ballpark. Two Grizzly pitchers combined to strike out 19, a season-high. Overall, the staff finished with 1,330 punchouts on the year, a PCL and franchise record. Brock Dykxhoorn (6-3) secured the win after five relief innings. He allowed a pair of hits, runs and walks while fanning a season-high 11. He followed Akeem Bostick, who made his Triple-A debut. The tall righty whiffed eight batters over five frames. He was charged with four runs (earned) on five hits and two free passes.
Two doubles in the bottom of the third put Salt Lake up 1-0. Luis Rengifo notched the RBI while Jose Rojas scored the run. An error in the top of the fourth evened the game at one. AJ Reed rumbled home on the play. Jabari Blash grabbed the Bees a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when he stole home.
Michael Hermosillo (2-for-5) extended the advantage to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth. He mashed a two-run tater to left field, his 12th of the year. Nick Tanielu (3-for-4) cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the sixth when he laced a double down the left field line, playing Jack Mayfield (2-for-5).
Myles Straw stole his 70th base of 2018 in the top of the seventh. He has 35 at both Double and Triple-A while only being caught nine times. Straw's swiping is the best in professional baseball by 15 and also in the PCL despite a mid-season promotion.
Fresno surged ahead 6-4 in the top of the eighth after a four-run frame. Mayfield blasted a two-run dinger to left field, his 16th of the year. Then, Yordan Alvarez matched Mayfield with a round-tripper to right field. The two-run wallop was his eighth with the Grizzlies.
Blash bashed a two-run clout in the bottom of the eighth, making it 6-6. It was his PCL-leading 29th big fly of the season. That would be enough to put the contest into extras.
Tanielu provided Fresno a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th with a go-ahead sacrifice fly to center. Up one, Dykxhoorn got Jared Walsh swinging (five strikeout day) with the bases-loaded to end the game.
With the victory, Grizzlies finished 25 games over .500, the second time in franchise history. Fresno also had a .590 win percentage, the best in squad history.
The Grizzlies enjoy an off day on Tuesday before facing the El Paso Chihuahuas Wednesday night in game one of the PCL divisional playoffs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PT from Southwest University Park. RHP Brady Rodgers (3-3, 5.49) gets the nod for Fresno while El Paso has yet to announce a starter.
