CLEARWATER, FL. - Clearwater defeated Dunedin by the final score of 8-4 on Friday night at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium. It was three up and three down innings for the first two frames of the contest for both starting pitchers. The Threshers made things interesting in the 3rd inning with two runners in scoring position with two outs. A ball roped to third base was gloved by Cullen Large on the dive. He pick himself up to spin and make the throw to first, but his spectacular play was broken up by slightly pulling the first baseman, Christian Williams, off the bag to score two runs in the inning.
The offense still sputtered through the middle inning as they couldn't plate a run even with seven hits through the first six innings. Meanwhile, Clearwater was able to take advantage in the 6th inning with two triples to lead off the inning and then a double to bring the lead to 4-0. Nick Allgeyer's day ended giving up four earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Dunedin made hints of a comeback in the final three innings. They scored one in the 7th off of a Cal Stevenson single, but the Threshers answered right back with two runs in the 8th inning to stretch their lead to 7-1. The Blue Jays were resilient as the club managed to match the runs in the 8th by way of two force-outs from Demi Orimoloye and Samad Taylor. The rally in the inning ended with a 13 pitch at-bat from Hunter Steinmetz that eventually ended with a pop out to Rodolfo Duran. The scoring wrapped up with Cal Stevenson reaching third base on a fielding error and Cullen Large knocking him in with a groundout to the shortstop, Nick Maton.
In the 8-4 loss, Cal Stevenson had a perfect relay to Samad Taylor to throw a runner out at third in the 4thinning. It was his sixth outfield assist on the season with four coming in the past 3 games. The Blue Jays will try to take one of three in the series with a win tomorrow on Jays Win, You Win Saturday presented by Cobb Theatres Countryside. The first 200 fans at the game tomorrow will receive a Wawa t-shirt. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
