Dunedin Blue Jays News Release

The 2018 season has been one of close calls for the Dunedin Blue Jays and Friday night was no exception. The Blue Jays played in their 51st one-run game of the year, most in the Florida State League, and their 70th game decided by two runs or less. Unfortunately for the Dunedin faithful, the Jays fell 2-1 to the St. Lucie in a tight pitcher's duel.

RHP Patrick Murphy took the mound for the Jays looking to end Dunedin's four-game losing skid and delivered a quality start for Dunedin. The hard-throwing righty threw seven strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking none. St. Lucie scored their only runs in the second, stringing together three consecutive hits for two runs. Jeremy Vasquez opened the inning with a single, which was followed by a Quinn Brodey single and a two-run double by Gene Cone.

After the two-run second, Murphy allowed just three additional hits over the next four innings to record his 12th quality start of the season. With five K's on the night, he improved his league-leading strikeout total to 125, seven more than Florida's Ian Anderson in second place.

As good as Murphy was on the mound, St. Lucie's David Peterson was slightly better, allowing no runs on just two hits over 5.0 innings while also striking out five. Dunedin scored their only run against the St. Lucie bullpen, pushing across a run in the sixth inning. With one out, RF Chad Spanberger worked a walk. C Riley Adams moved him over with a ground out to the right side, and LF Brock Lundquist drove him in with a single up the middle.

The one run was all Dunedin would get. CF Rodrigo Orozco and 2B Ivan Castillo strung singles together in the seventh, putting the tying run at first, but a double play ball ended the inning and the threat. Dunedin wouldn't put a runner in scoring position the rest of the game.

Castillo was 2-5 for Dunedin, improving his batting average to .301 and moving into a tie for first place in the Florida State League batting title chase.

The loss drops is Dunedin's fifth straight and drops their second half record to 30-24 and their overall record below the .500 mark at 61-62. The Blue Jays remain 5.5 games out of first place in the North Division, sitting in third place. St. Lucie and Dunedin will continue their three-game set at Dunedin Stadium tomorrow evening at 6:30.
