Mickey Moniak extended his hit streak to 11 games, and Alejandro Requena turned in seven strong innings as the Threshers came up short in the series opener at Fort Myers, 3-2 at Hammond Stadium on Friday night.

The Threshers (35-19) (67-55) remain in first place in the Florida State League North with just 15 games remaining in the regular season. Clearwater sits three games up on Lakeland, and 5.5 ahead of Dunedin.

Requena (3-4) turned in his longest outing of the season, hurling seven innings of two-run ball. The right-hander permitted just four hits and three walks, and struck out seven.

Phillies rehabber Pedro Florimon finished 0-for-4 in his third game with Clearwater, playing all nine innings as the designated hitter. Florimon was placed on the Phillies disabled list with a right foot fracture on May 30.

Clearwater grabbed an early advantage in the second, when Edgar Cabral led off with a single to left against Miracle starter Bryan Simmons (1-1). After Luke Williams' grounder to short moved Cabral into scoring position, Kyle Martin lined a single to right to score Cabral.

Fort Myers (33-21) (61-61) fought back in the third. Ben Rortvedt and Ernie De La Trinidad each singled, and Royce Lewis drew a walk to load the bases. Taylor Grzelakowski's sacrifice fly tied the ballgame, and a wild pitch permitted De La Trinidad to score the go-ahead run.

That score held into the eighth. Facing reliever Jonathan Hennigan, Lewis lofted his fifth home run for the Miracle to extend the Fort Myers lead to 3-1. The run was the first permitted by Hennigan in 12.2 innings since his promotion to Clearwater.

Moniak brought the deficit back to one in the ninth, shooting a 1-1 pitch from Jovani Moran over the wall in right-center for his fifth home run of the season.

Edgar Cabral was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on, but Moran managed to induce a pop out o short from Williams to end the game.

Game two of the series is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, when Mauricio Llovera toes the rubber against Charlie Barnes.
