Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Ohio) In a match-up between the Eastern League's two first place teams, Akron righthander Will Roberts filled the role of stopper, hurling six innings and allowing just one run to lead Akron to a 6-1 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs in the series opener at Canal Park on Friday.
The win breaks the RubberDucks' four-game losing streak, which matched their longest of the season.
Alex Lavisky got things started in the first inning with an RBI single to drive in Joe Wendle, who reached on a single, handing the RubberDucks an early 1-0 edge.
Portland's sole run came off a sac fly from catcher Blake Swihart. With runners on the corners and one out Wendle turned a double play to halt the frame, leaving the score tied at 1-1.
The tie did not last long as Francisco Lindor slapped a double into center field to kick off the frame and get the momentum going. His double was followed by three more Akron hits including a two-run double from Wendle and RBI single off the bat of Bryan LaHair to make the score at 4-1.
Three scoreless innings ensued before the 'Ducks posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh as LaHair clubbed a two-run single for extra insurance.
Roberts (6-7) picked up the win after striking out four batters and allowing six hits. The win gives Roberts the most victories in the RubberDucks' bullpen. It was his second outing on the season in which he did not issue a walk.
Reliever Louis Head struck out all three batters faced in his single inning pitched.
Portland starter Miguel Pena (2-2) was the losing pitcher after allowing 11 of Akron's 13 hits and all six of the RubberDucks' runs.
The RubberDucks (40-28) will continue the three-game series against the Sea Dogs (42-23) at Canal Park on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Akron will send RHP Will Roberts (5-7, 4.02) to the mound while LHP Miguel Pena (2-1, 6.17) is expected to make the start for the Sea Dogs.
