Staten Island FerryHawks News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY- Staten Island and Long Island combined for 14 runs, 27 hits, and five home runs in Friday night's series-opener at Fairfield Properties Ballpark, leading to a 9-5 Ducks win in the fourth 'Battle of the Belt.' Mariel Bautista became the first FerryHawk with a multi-home run game, blasting a pair of solo home runs in the loss.
Bautista's first of two home runs started the scoring Friday in the top of the second inning. He launched Joe Iorio's first pitch of the frame deep over the wall in left field for his first longball of the season, giving the FerryHawks a 1-0 lead.
The derby at the Ducks continued in the bottom of the third with Matt Solter on the bump for his eighth start of the season. Dustin Woodcock's one-out two-run blast pushed the Ducks in front and gave Long Island a lead they'd never relinquish.
Leading 3-1 entering the sixth inning, the Ducks big blow came on their second home run of the night. Joe DeCarlo started the frame with a double, putting a man in scoring position for Jake Zarrello. Zarello hit a groundball back to Solter, who caught DeCarlo between second and third in a rundown. The FerryHawks failed to catch DeCarlo due to a drop and then botched throw by shortstop Alfredo Reyes. With two in scoring position and no one out, Solter managed to strikeout Devin Marrero and get Woodcock to ground out to first base without either runners advancing. Now with two outs and two strikes on Vladimir Frias, Solter plunked the Ducks second basemen, loading the bases for De Aza. The former major leaguer made the FerryHawks pay for their sixth-inning miscues, belting a grand slam over the right-center field wall to put the Ducks in front 7-1.
The FerryHawks would respond in the form of Mariel Bautista the very next inning, blasting his second solo home run of the game to make it 7-2.
Iorio's (5-0) only two runs allowed came on the Bautista blasts. He gave up four hits and four walks with one strikeout.
Solter (0-4) hurled six innings and gave up a season-worst 11 hits and seven runs. He whiffed three and walked two. The FerryHawks scored as many runs in his Friday start (5) as they had in his previous seven starts combined.
Sam Travis supplied a two-run single off of Connor Law in the eighth inning to extend the Ducks lead to 9-2.
Staten Island rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning, including their third home run of the game. Ricardo Cespedes' solo blast kickstarted the frame and closed the gap to 9-3. Reyes drew a one-out walk and was pushed home on a double by Javier Betancourt. Joseph Monge's RBI single to score Betancourt made it a 9-5 game before an Aguilar fly out ended the game.
Staten Island (9-28) and Long Island play the middle game of their trio on Saturday at 6:35 PM at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. RHP Jordan Simpson is scheduled to pitch for the FerryHawks against Ducks LHP Stephen Tarpley. The FerryHawks Pregame Show gets going at 6:20 PM on the SI FerryHawks YouTube Stream.
Postgame Notes: All three FerryHawks home runs led off innings...Mariel Bautista (2-for-4, 2 HR), Joseph Monge (2-for-5), and Brandon Wagner (2-for-4) each recorded multi-hit games...Staten Island finished 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position...
