Ducks Come From Behind To Win 9-8

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY- The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-8 in front of 6,011 fans at Citibank Park on Monday evening.

The Patriots struck first by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Second baseman Teuris Olivares drew a one out walk, stole second and scored on a two out RBI single to left by third baseman Jeff Nettles. Designated hitter Josh Pressley followed with a single to left center and then first baseman Alan Zinter ripped a RBI single to right to score Nettles.

Somerset added two more runs in the top of the second inning to extend their lead to 4-0. Catcher Travis Anderson led off with a single to left center and came around to score when rightfielder Elliott Ayala followed with a RBI double to right center. After a groundout moved Ayala to third, Olivares then drove in Ayala with a one out RBI single to center.

The Patriots scored an unearned run in the top of the third inning to make it 5-0 when Nettles reached on Ducks throwing error on a groundball to short and came around to score on a two out RBI triple to right center by shortstop Jose Morban.

The Ducks got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the third inning to make it 5-1 when second baseman Jose Offerman hit a one out solo home run to left center, his 2nd of the 2007 season.

Long Island tied the game up at 5-5 when they scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Ducks loaded the bases on a single to center by first baseman P.J. Rose, a single to left by rightfielder Damian Rolls and a walk to shortstop Edgardo Alfonzo. Centerfielder Norm Hutchins followed with a two run single to right to plate Rose and Rolls. Offerman then cleared the bases with a two out two run double to deep left.

Somerset retook the lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning to make it 6-5. The Patriots loaded the bases on walks to Zinter and Morban and a single to left by Anderson. Ayala drove in Zinter with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Ducks answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 9-6 lead. Long Island loaded the bases on a single to center by Rose, a hit-by-pitch to designated hitter Kevin Haverbusch and a walk to Rolls. Alfonzo then cleared the bases with a mammoth grand slam home run to left, his 2nd of the year.

The Patriots scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Ducks lead to 9-8 when Olivares led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a colossal one out two run home run over the scoreboard in left, his league leading 16th of the year.

Ducks reliever Travis Wade (2-0) picked up the win, allowing just three hits and striking out two in 2.2 scoreless innings pitched. Patriots reliever Jason Richardson (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one in 1.2 innings pitched. Ducks closer Danny Graves pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 14th save of the season.

With the loss the Patriots dropped to 23-19 on the 2007 season while the Ducks improved to 27-15.

The Somerset Patriots 10th Anniversary Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Sunday, June 24th when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 6:35 pm game against the Camden Riversharks.
