Camden Riversharks News Release
CAMDEN, NJ - LJ Biernbaum extended his hitting streak to 19 games with an RBI single in the sixth, giving Camden a lead it would never relinquish in snapping a four-game losing streak with a 8-6 win over Bridgeport on Tuesday night at Campbell's Field. Biernbaum reached base safely in all five plate appearances and helped the Riversharks past the North Division leaders.
The Bluefish tied the score at 5-5 with two runs in the sixth, but Camden answered back immediately. A one-out single by Denny Abreu and a walk to Dwight Maness set the stage for Biernbaum's single. The lefty sent a line-drive up the middle to plate Abreu and Ben Davis followed with a base hit to extend the lead to 7-5. Biernbaum later scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring.
Maness' three-run home run to dead center sparked a four-run second, which started with a round-tripper by Craig Paquette, and the hosts added a run in the fifth on Angel Pena's RBI double.
Pete Shier, Davis and Pena all had a pair of hits for Camden. Almost half of the âSharks 11 hits went for extra bases, with three doubles and a pair of homers.
Ryan Costello (4-5) picked up the win, scattering 12 hits in six innings and allowing five earned runs. Ramon Linares, who sports a miniscule 1.03 ERA in 21 appearances, pitched two perfect innings to hold the lead and make way for the Atlantic League leader in saves, Chris Fussell. The right-hander recorded his 17th save of the season despite allowing a earned run in the ninth.
Justin Sturge (6-2) suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs (five earned) in 5.1 innings. Former major leaguer Junior Spivey had two doubles, a home run and a single to pace the visitors.
Bluefish manager Tommy John and Camden skipper Joe Ferguson spent eight seasons as teammates with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1971-76) and California Angels (1982-83).
The Riversharks (25-18) conclude their three-game series with the Bluefish (28-15) at Campbell's Field on Wednesday at 7:05 PM. Tickets are still available by calling 1-866-SHARKS-9 or by logging onto www.riversharks.com.
