
Duarte's Late Goal Not Enough in 5-4 Shootout Loss

HAMILTON, ONTARIO. The Hamilton Bulldogs returned home for a Saturday evening game to face the Kingston Frontenacs for the first time this season. The Bulldogs were fired up coming off the 6-3 win against Niagara on Thursday night, looking to keep the 3-game win streak alive this weekend.
The first period saw a back-and-forth battle, including 4 successful Bulldogs penalty kills. Towards the end of the opening period Avery Hayes was able to sneak one past Leevi Merilainen, his 7th of the season, to open the scoring at 12:14 from Ryan Humphrey and Logan Morison. The Bulldogs kept the Frontenacs on their toes this period, defending their lead and the shutout period for Marco Costantini. The Bulldogs ended the period 1-0 and on the a 5 minute powerplay following a head check to Navrin Mutter.
The second period heated up starting with the Bulldogs powerplay unit seeing lots of chances but no final touch. Playing 4-4 the Frontenacs got their footing and Lucas Edmonds put one in at 4:14. One minute later Edmonds scored his second of the game at 5:32. On the powerplay the Frontenacs scored once more from Shane Wright at 7:48 to make the game 3-1. With 3 minutes left Hayes steps up to get his 8th of the season and 2nd of the game with a wicked shot from the slot to make the game 3-2 heading to the second intermission.
The third period saw the Bulldogs bring the heat to the Frontenacs zone looking for the tying goal and Jonathan Melee broke the ice and scored the tying goal, his 5th of the year, at 5:38 from Chandler Romeo and Lucas Moore. Minutes later Wright scored his second of the game on the powerplay once again to give the Frontenacs a 4-3 goal lead.
Hamilton's own Mark Duarte scored a sweet wrap around goal, his 7th of the season, at 16:04 off the work of Jan Mysak and George Diaco to tie it up once more.
After 60 minutes of play the score was left unsettled as the teams headed into a 3 on 3 overtime. The 3 on 3 overtime was tight and fast both teams battled hard to score the winning goal, Costantini and MerilÃäinen had other plans and stood on their heads to keep the game going and head into a shootout.
After the 13-shot shootout, the Bulldogs were unsuccessful and the Frontenacs Christopher Thibodeau scored the winning shootout goal as the 14th shooter, giving Kingston the 5-4 victory.
The Hamilton Bulldogs head to the Tribute Communities Centre Sunday Night to face the Oshawa Generals at 6:05 pm.
