Greenville Drive News Release

Kannapolis, NC - Despite being out slugged by the Kannapolis Intimidators 15 hits versus 12 hits, the Greenville Drive ran their winning streak to a season-high three games by defeating Kannapolis 15-7 Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The win improved the Drive to 29-26 on the season.

The Drive tagged Intimidators starter Ryan Rote early and often as they scored eight runs before chasing him from the game in the top of the third inning. In the top of the first Dominic Ramos reached base with a one-out single. A throwing error by Rote on a picked off attempt allowed Ramos to advance to third before scoring on Yahmed Yema's groundout.

In the top of the second, the Drive scored six runs on five hits. Tony Granadillo and Logan Sorensen accounted for Greenville's first run when both led off with back-to-back doubles with Granadillo scoring on Sorensen's hit. Bubba Bell then singled home Sorensen. After Christian Lara walked and Jay Johnson walked to load the bases, Rote issued another walk, this time to Ramos to allow another Drive run. Yema then cleared the bases with a double to right field.

Three more runs in each of the third and fourth innings would extend the Drive's lead to 13-0. In the top of the third, RBI doubles by Bell and Johnson, and an RBI single by Lara accounted for the Drive's runs. An inning later two Kannapolis errors allowed all three Drive runs to score. With the bases loaded Lara reached on a fielding error that allowed Mark Wagner and Mike Leonard to score. Johnson followed by also reaching on an error, scoring Bell.

The Intimidators finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with two runs off Drive starter Chris Jones. After Brandon Allen singled, Salvador Sanchez homered to left.

Kannapolis would add one run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Allen doubled home Brandon Johnson. An inning later, Johnson singled home Jose Rodriguez off reliever J.T. Zink.

Greenville's would finish out their scoring with two more runs in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Wagner hit a single to center, scoring Lara and Ramos.

After scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth, the Intimidators rounded out their scoring with two runs in the ninth off Blake Maxwell. With two outs, Johnson doubled home Manuel Rodriguez and Lenny Acosta.

J.T. Zink (3-3) tossed 2.1 innings in relief, allowing one unearned run on three hits and three walks while striking out one. Starter Chris Jones received a no-decision as he only pitched 4.2 innings.

The Drive look to complete their first sweep of the season Sunday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium with first pitch set for 5:05 PM. Greenville will send right-hander Clay Buchholz to the mound as Kannapolis will counter with right-hander Derek Rodriguez.

The Drive return home on Monday, June 5th when they begin a four-game series with the Charleston RiverDogs, affiliate of the New York Yankees. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM at West End Field as Greenville will send left-hander Michael Rozier to the mound.
