Lake County Captains News Release

(Eastlake, OH)--West Virginia's Ryan Crew hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning Saturday, as the Power rallied for a 7-6 win over the Captains at Classic Park.

The Power (30-23) extended their winning streak to six straight games. They will attempt to sweep the Captains when the series concludes on Sunday afternoon at 2:05.

The Captains led 3-1 entering the seventh. Captains starter Jim Deters retired the first two Power hitters of the inning, but Ned Yost reached on a fielding error by second baseman Matt Fornasiere. The next hitter, Tony Festa, doubled home Yost to make it 3-2.

Deters was lifted in favor of Mike Finocchi who surrendered a two-run, opposite-field homer to Crew to give the Power a 4-3 lead. It was Crew's second of the year.

Finochi (4-1) allowed three more runs in the eight to make it 7-3. Michael Brantley walked and Angel Salome singled. Mat Gamel tripled in both runners, and then scored on Mike Bell's sacrifice fly.

Johnny Drennen homered off Power reliever Wil Laureano in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 7-4. Laureano walked the next three hitters and was taken out. Lefty closer Joe Thatcher entered the game and struck out Juan Valdes for the second out. He walked Niuman Romero to force in a run and make it 7-5, but Mike Conroy popped up to end the inning.

In the ninth, Thatcher walked Nick Petrucci with one out. After a fly-out by Drennen, Josh Noviskey doubled to right, moving Petrucci to third. Noviskey, who homered in the second inning, was lifted for pinch-runner Jason Denham. Omar Casillas followed with a single to left to score Petrucci. Bell was able to knock the ball down in shallow left to keep Denham at third. Thatcher then struck out Fernando Pacheco to end the game. It was Thatcher's eighth save.

The Captains (24-31) have lost four in a row and five of the last six games. Saturday's game was the 15th one-run loss by the Captains this season.

Deters retired 13 in a row before the error on Fornasiere in the seventh. He gave up only four hits and did not walk a batter. He fanned five.

Pat Ryan (1-1) threw four scoreless innings to pick up the win for West Virginia. Ryan relieved starter Rafael Lluberes in the fourth and gave up only two hits.

After the homestand concludes on Sunday, the Captains will begin a four-game series at Lexington on Monday. In the second game of the series on Tuesday, the Captains are scheduled to face future Hall-of-Famer Roger Clemens who will be making a tune-up start for the Legends after signing a free-agent contract with the Houston Astros last week. The game will be broadcast locally on WELW AM 1330 and WKNR AM 850.
