Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Brian Peacock and Scott Schade each drove in multiple runs as the Sand Gnats downed the Rome Braves 7-3 Saturday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Peacock belted his ninth homer of the year while Schade recorded three RBI in his first game with Savannah.
Opening Day starter Craig Stammen earned just his third win of the season, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits in 5.2 innings. Stammen did not give up a base-hit until the fourth inning. Bryan Lambert, Jr. came out of the bullpen in the sixth and struck out a season-high four batters in 2.1 innings of relief. Ricky Shefka threw a scoreless ninth to secure the win.
Rome starter Jo Jo Reyes suffered his first loss of the season, breaking a league-high six-game winning streak. Reyes gave up a season-high six runs in a season-low four innings of work.
The Gnats fell behind in the top of the first on an unearned run, but responded in the next half inning with two runs of their own, courtesy of Schade's two-run double to center.
Savannah tacked on one more in the bottom of the second when Tim Pahuta led off the inning with a double off the wall in left and came in to score as Jose Contreras stuck a single through the right side of the infield.
Savannah pulled away in the fifth when Francisco Plasencia worked a leadoff walk and scored all the way from first on a double to left-center off the bat of Ofilio Castro. With one runner on, Peacock stepped up and delivered a home run to deep left field to put the Gnats up, 6-1.
The Gnats and Braves play the series finale Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Savannah will send right-hander Carlos Martinez (1-2, 6.19) to the mound to face Rome righty Chris Vines (5-1, 3.47). Sunday is Family Fun Day at the ball park, featuring a post-game run around the bases and player autograph session with a free newspaper to the first 205 fans, presented by the Savannah Morning News. In honor of National Cancer Survivors Day, the Sand Gnats will honor cancer survivors in the seventh inning of Sunday's game.
