Grand Rapids Drive News Release
GRAND RAPIDS - The Grand Rapids Drive (19-19) exploded offensively at home on Wednesday night following the break, defeating the Erie BayHawks (17-19) by a 142-112 final. The Drive got their record back up to .500 for the first time since November 30 in convincing fashion, as their 142 points tied a franchise record and bested their season high by a full 17 points.
Marcus Thornton was the brightest star for the Drive, scoring 40 points and going 11-of-17 from three-point range with five steals. The 11 threes was a new franchise record, breaking the previous mark of nine by Jordan Crawford on December 20, 2016. The 40 points was also a new season high by a Grand Rapids player.
Speedy Smith also set a new season best for a Drive player with 15 assists, Shep Garner knocked down six three-pointers off the bench for 18 points, Michael Bethea Jr. scored 15 points, Isaiah Whitehead finished with 14 points and eight assists and Adam Woodbury had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Terrence Jones finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds, both of which led the BayHawks. They featured two other 20-point scorers, as Alex Poythress had 21 points and five rebounds and John Gillon scored 20 with six assists.
The Drive also set a new franchise record for team assists in a game with 40, breaking their previous record by five. They hit 22 three- pointers as a team, a new season best that equaled their second-best team mark ever. They finished at 51 percent from three on the game and their point totals for both the first and second halves were comfortably season bests. The Drive led by as many as 38 points and ultimately finished with their first 30-point win of the year.
Grand Rapids will look to keep its playoff hopes alive over the course of a five-game road trip that begins Friday night with a meeting with the Westchester Knicks. The BayHawks will look to rebound from their sixth straight loss when they host the Canton Charge, also Friday night.
