CHARLESTON, SC - Caleb Clay and Yeiper Castillo combined on a five-hitter and Ryan Lavarnway drove home a pair of runs as the Greenville Drive stopped the Charleston RiverDogs, 4-2, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 2,818 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, Greenville improves to 14-11 on the season while Charleston slips to 13-12.

Charleston captured an initial 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second when Taylor Grote slapped a single up the middle and scooted to second after a passed ball. Melky Mesa knocked a double down the left-field line that scored Grote to open the game's scoring.

The Drive quickly responded and took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third when Pete Hissey laced a double to begin the inning. After Mitch Denning walked off Charleston starter Brett Marshall (0-3), Anthony Rizzo singled to left to load the bases. With the sacks packed, Lavarnway doubled down the left-field line that plated Hissey and Dening as Rizzo raced to third. Oscar Tejeda singled to right to drive in Rizzo for Greenville's third run.

Greenville extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth when David Mailman cracked a one-out triple to right field and then scampered home after Hissey's sacrifice fly to right.

The RiverDogs narrowed the gap to 4-2 in the home half of the eighth frame when Ray Kruml doubled to left, stole third and sprinted home on Brian Baisley's sacrifice fly to center.

Clay (1-1) earned the victory in his first start of the season as he allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out three in five innings. Castillo, who pitched the final four stanzas, collected his first save of the season as he allowed one run on a pair of hits while striking out four.

Marshall went 4.2 innings and surrendered three runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four. Reliever Cory Arbisio pitched three complete innings and allowed one run on a hit while fanning a pair, and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte went the final 1.1 innings and gave up one hit while striking out three.

Mesa paced the RiverDogs offensively with two of the team's five hits while Hissey led the Drive with two of the team's nine knocks.

Charleston and Greenville battle in the final contest of their four-game set Tuesday morning at 11:05 a.m. as the RiverDogs send right-hander Andrew Brackman (0-3, 4.91 ERA) to the mound while the Drive counters with righty Brock Huntzinger (1-0, 3.20 ERA).
