July 2, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, SC - The third time was the charm for the Charleston RiverDogs (43-35, 4-4). In each of the first two games of the series, the Drive (42-33, 3-4) fell behind 3-0 to their cross-state rival, and in both instances they rallied for a win.
However, on Thursday the âDogs were able to hold onto the lead as they never allowed Greenville to get on the scoreboard, picking up a 3-0 win in the third game of the series.
Charleston snatched a 1-0 advantage in the first when Ray Kruml drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on Melky Mesa's groundout for the game's first run.
The RiverDogs added to their lead in the second when Neall French and Mike Lyon each drew walks and circled the bases on Jose Pirela's double to left to make the home team's lead 3-0.
Greenville starter Nike Hagadone (0-2) did not issue a hit; however he walked four and struck out two while surrendering three earned runs in 1-2/3 innings on the bump.
Reliever Mike Lee went 4-1/3 frames and allowed three hits while striking out five and Mitchell Herold threw the last two stanzas and walked one while also striking out five. All told, the three Drive hurlers fanned 12 RiverDogs.
Offensively, the Drive managed just four hits off a trio of Charleston pitchers. First baseman Jered Stanley led the way, ratcheting two of Greenville's base hits, including a double.
The Drive and RiverDogs conclude their four-game series at Riley Park on Friday with first pitch set for 6:35 PM. Greenville will send right-hander Caleb Clay (3-3, 3.29 ERA) to the mound while Charleston counters with the South Atlantic League's win leader, right-hander David Phelps (8-2, 3.03 ERA).
The Drive return home to Fluor Field and begin the home portion of the second half of the regular season on Saturday, July 4th. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM as Fluor Field will stay open after the game for fans to view the City of Greenville's fireworks from the field. Single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com for more information.
