
Asheville Held Back In Ninth Once More

(Savannah, GA) For the second consecutive night Asheville had the tying run on in the ninth inning, Raul Reyes smacked a homerun, and the Tourists were hit with a loss. Savannah defeated Asheville 4-3 on Thursday at Historic Grayson Stadium as Asheville had the tying - and winning- runs on the bases but could not convert. Phillips Orta struck out Delta Clear to end the game and clean up a save for winning pitcher Eric Beaulac.
Savannah (39-39, 4-4) scored in the first inning with a Sean Ratliff sacrifice fly. Parker Frazier walked Raul Reyes to begin the first and Reyes came around to score after a Jefry Marte single and Ratliff sac fly. Frazier then picked up one of two double plays on the night to end the inning trialing 1-0.
Asheville took their only lead with a bases loaded single from Carlos Martinez. The Tourist loaded the bases with two outs with singles from Kiel Roling and Ryan Peisel. Tyler Massey then reached on a dropped third strike to allow Martinez to bat and drive in the only Asheville runs in the game.
Savannah scored an unearned run on Frazier in the fourth and took the lead on the Reyes homerun in the fifth inning. Parker Frazier tossed 6 /23 innings allowed four runs (three earned) with two walks and three strikeouts in the loss. Eric Beaulac (4-4) picked up the win with a season high nine strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Asheville threatened in the 9th inning after Savannah closer Rhiner Cruz walked the first two batters Cruz was then replaced by Philips Ortega with the go-ahead run on base. Carlos Martinez popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt and Scott Robinson followed with a groundout to short. Delta Cleary would then strikeout to end the game.
The two teams will play the final game of the series on Friday from Savannah at 6:30 with Asheville's Juan Nicasio (1-1, 2.10) on the mound. The Sand Gnats will counter with RHP Kyle Allen (5-3, 4.26). All the action can be heard on 100.7 FM WRES or online at www.theashevilletourists.com
