CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston starter Cory Arbiso and a pair of relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as the RiverDogs whitewashed the Greenville Drive, 3-0, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 5,506 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Arbiso (2-5), who was activated earlier in the day from Staten Island, pitched extremely well having gone 5.1 innings and faced three over the minimum. He allowed a pair of hits while retiring the final 12 batters he faced. Of the 16 outs that Arbiso recorded, nine came on ground outs and four on strikeouts.
Relievers Brad Rulon and closer Jonathan Ortiz combined to pitch the final 3.2 frames and allowed two hits while striking out three and walking one. Ortiz collected his second save of the season in the process.
With the victory, the RiverDogs balance its second half record to 4-4 (43-35 overall) while the Drive slip to 3-4 in the second half (42-33 overall). The shutout was the first for the RiverDogs since June 29 at Savannah and the first at The Joe since June 10 against Augusta.
Charleston snatched a 1-0 advantage in the first when Ray Kruml drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on Melky Mesa's groundout for the game's first run.
The RiverDogs added to their lead in the second when Neall French and Mike Lyon each drew walks and circled the bases on Jose Pirela's double to left to make the home team's lead 3-0.
Greenville starter Nike Hagadone (0-2) did not issue a hit; however he walked four and struck out two while surrendering three earned runs in 1.2 innings on the bump. Reliever Mike Lee went 4.1 frames and allowed three hits while striking out five and Mitchell Herold threw the last two stanzas and walked one while also striking out five. All told, the three Drive hurlers fanned 12 RiverDogs.
Mitch Abeita, Addison Maruszak and Pirela accounted for the RiverDogs' three hits while Jered Stanley ratcheted two of the Drive's four base knocks.
In the series finale that is set for Friday at 6:35 p.m., the RiverDogs turn to Notre Dame product David Phelps (8-2, 3.03) while the Drive counter with righty Caleb Clay (3-3, 3.29). After the contest, the RiverDogs will showcase its' annual Independence Day celebration postgame fireworks show. .
