Hickory Crawdads News Release

SALISBURY, MD - For the second straight game, the Hickory Crawdads topped the Delmarva Shorebirds by the score of 7-4, before 4,612 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday night.

After both starters -- RHP Wilmer Font (4-1) for the Crawdads and LHP Cole McCurry (3-6) for the Shorebirds -- alternated dealing scoreless innings for the first four frames, the Crawdads (4-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth. RF Mike Bianucci walked and 3B Matt West singled to get on, before LF Cristian Santana belted a three-run homer over the left field wall, making it 3-0.

Hickory extended it's lead to 4-0, plating a run in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded on three straight hits to start the frame, West drove a pitch to center field, deep enough to score Hollander from third on the sacrifice fly.

Delmarva (4-4) welcomed RHP Wilfredo Boscan to the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run to get on the board. After giving up the run early in the inning, Boscan retired the next nine batters in a row over the next three innings, while the Crawdads plated three insurance runs to stretch the lead to 7-1.

CF David Paisano was hit by a pitch to start the eighth inning and scored later in the frame on an error, which also enabled Bianucci to reach second base. Bianucci stole his way to third and then came home on a two-out RBI single by West, putting Hickory ahead, 6-1. In the top of the ninth inning, DH Mike Hollander came through with a two-out RBI single of his own, plating C Leonel De Los Santos from third base to extend the lead to 7-1.

Delmarva refused to go quietly in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three earned runs against Boscan after the righty had cruised through the previous two innings. A two-out, two-run single by C Luis Bernardo capped the three-run inning and chased Boscan from the game. RHP Tyler Tufts came on to save the ballgame and retired SS Greg Miclat on a groundout for the final out of the contest. Font earned the win with five shutout innings in the start and Tufts registered his fourth save of the year, and second in the last two games. McCurry was tagged with the loss for Delmarva.
