Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Raul Reyes struck for the second day in a row with a game-winning home run as his fifth-inning, two-run shot held up to give the Gnats a, 4-3, victory over the Asheville Tourists Thursday night in front of 2,204 at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Rhiner Cruz dealt the ninth for the second-straight night but walked the first two batters to put the tying and go-ahead runs on. Phillips Orta was summoned from the bullpen and retired all three men he faced, including a game-ending strikeout of Delta Cleary, for his first save of the season.
Reyes' knock was his fourth on the year and the second of the season against Asheville starter Parker Frazier (4-6) who loses for the second time this season against the Gnats.
Savannah started out ahead for the third straight night on a sacrifice-fly RBI by Sean Ratliff in the first. Asheville took the lead in the second after a dropped third strike with Tyler Massey at the plate extended the inning and Carlos Martinez knocked a two-run single. The Gnats tied it in the fourth on a Stefan Welch double-play groundout that scored Wilmer Flores.
Eric Beaulac (4-4) turned in another sparkling start for Savannah starters, limiting the Tourists to six hits and tossing a season-high nine strikeouts. It's the first time a Savannah pitcher has struck out nine batters in a game since John Holdzkom dealt nine strikeouts against Rome in the first game of a doubleheader on August 23, 2008.
The Sand Gnats (4-4, 39-39) go for the series win tomorrow evening with Kyle Allen (5-3, 4.26 ERA) facing Juan Nicasio (1-1, 2.10) for Asheville (4-3, 30-46).
It's a special pre-Independence Day edition of Fireworks Friday to conclude a nine-game homestand as we light up the sky following the 6:30 p.m. start. Only General Admission seats remain for the KIX 96 Friday night game, so log on to sandgnats.com or call 912.351.9150 to reserve your spot.
