September 5th Declared "Fair or Fowl Night"
July 2, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The second half of the 2009 season opened at Lake Olmstead Stadium with a classic battle between the Augusta GreenJackets and the Rome Braves and in true Southern style, with a touch of controversy. In a nod to honor the events of the June 25th contest, the GreenJackets announce that Rome's next game in Augusta - Saturday September 5th - will be "Fair or Fowl Night", sponsored by Bojangles.
In the tenth inning of the June 25th game that was tied at six, Rome catcher Matt Kennelly hit a drive down the left-field line and over the fence that was thought to be a home run by many in attendance, including the entire Rome bench. The ball was ruled foul by the home plate umpire, launching Rome manager Randy Ingle into a tirade that has become an instant classic. Augusta went on to win the game 7-6 in 11 innings.
Video of the incident has since been featured on Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard blog, ESPN's SportsCenter, the MLB Network and Fox News, among other outlets. Mike Anderson, who shoots game video for the San Francisco Giants at Lake Olmstead Stadium, captured the tirade on film with a DVD copy going to Billy Byler of the Augusta Chronicle. Byler's placement of the video on his Full Sports Press blog on the newspaper's website triggered the event's rise to national prominence.
The first 1,000 fans attending the September 5th game will receive Bojangles gift cards for various amounts. All on-field games will have the end result of "fair or fowl" with the winners receiving prizes from Bojangles. Anyone catching a foul ball in the stands will be given the chance after the game to do what Kennelly was unable to do on June 25th - run the bases at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
First pitch on September 5th will come at 7:05. The Jackets wrap up a four-game homestand with games Thursday and Friday against the Lexington Legends. First pitch will come at 7:05 from Lake Olmstead Stadium. You may purchase seats to both games and every home game by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
