Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds (48-41, 10-10) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, breaking a tie game, and held on for a 3-1 victory over the Drive (48-42, 8-12) at Perdue Stadium on Wednesday.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the sixth, the Drive used two hits to tie game off Delmarva starter Nathan Nery. Che-Hsuan Lin singled, and after advancing to second on a Ryan Adams error, scored on Yamaico Navarro's double.
But as quickly as the Drive tied the ballgame, the Shorebirds untied it. Jordan Craft (0-4) replaced Felix Doubront and promptly surrendered a leadoff triple to Matthew Tucker. A passed ball during the very next batter allowed Tucker to score, representing the eventual game-winning run. An inning later, Adams added an RBI-single after Craft issued back-to-back walks.
The Shorebirds struck first, plating a run on four hits in the bottom of the third, but more damage could have been done as they left the bases loaded. Tucker singled in the game's first run, but Greenville starter Felix Doubront worked through the jam and induced Joseph Mahoney into an inning-ending fly out.
The southpaw lasted 5.0 innings, allowing a run on five hits and a walk while fanning one in earning a no-decision. Kyle Foster tossed a no-hit ninth inning, walking one and striking out one.
The duo of Cliff Flagello and Mick Mattaliano combined on the final 3.1 innings, holding the Drive scoreless. Flagello (4-2) picked up the victory, allowing a hit and two walks with four strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Mattaliano added a perfect 1.1 innings, earning his 19th save of the season.
The Drive and Shorebirds conclude their four-game series tomorrow evening with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Greenville will send lefty Jose Capellan to the hill in search of a series split as Delmarva counters with right-hander Robert Neigebauer.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Wednesday, July 16th when the began an eight-game homestand with the Lake County Captains. For more information regarding single-game tickets, ticket plans, group outings and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
