Dave Williams went 3-for-3 and scored the winning run in the eighth inning as the Charleston RiverDogs edged the Lexington Legends, 5-4, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday afternoon at soggy Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The afternoon tilt was played in front of 4,411 fans - mostly kids from local day camps - in the RiverDogs' annual Splash Day.

With the victory, Charleston improves to 8-11 in the season's second half and 53-36 overall while Lexington drops to 5-15 since the All-Star break and 26-63 overall.

Williams, the RiverDogs' left fielder, led the 11-hit attack with three while Jesus Montero and Austin Romine each added a pair.

With the game tied 4-4 in the eighth inning, Legends reliever Fernando Abad (1-4) struck out the RiverDogs' first two batters, Brandon Laird and Carmen Angelini. Williams then singled on a 3-2 pitch, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on Austin Krum's game-winning RBI single.

Jonathan Ortiz pitched an uneventful ninth inning to earn his 23rd save of the season.

Dellin Betances struck out six batters in five innings in his second start back from the disabled list. Betances faced a total of 21 batters and scattered two hits while allowing an unearned run. In addition to his six punchouts, he walked five batters.

Charleston took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth when Jesus Montero blasted a solo home run, his team-leading ninth round-tripper, that came on a 1-1 pitch from Legends starter Luis Pardo.

The Legends started their scoring in the fifth inning when Jonathan Fixler reached first on an error and later scored on Eric Taylor's RBI single up the middle to knot the score at 1-1.

In the sixth, Stephen Artz replaced Betances for Charleston and Lexington took advantage. Brian Pellegrini singled and moved to second on a groundout. Steve Brown drove home Pellegrini on a single to left, giving the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

But Charleston retaliated with three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Reid Kelly replaced Pardo and Bradley Suttle scored on a throwing error by Taylor, the Legends' first baseman, on Brandon Laird's fielder's choice grounder tying the score at 2.

After Carmen Angelini fanned for the second out, Williams singled home a pair of runs to hand Charleston a 4-2 lead.

Lexington tied the game with a pair of runs in the seventh on Taylor's bases-loaded single to right against Artz that plated a pair of runs to knot the game at 4-4.

The four Charleston hurlers combined to limit Lexington to seven hits. Taylor led the Legends with two knocks and three RBI.

Chase Vacek (4-3), who relieved Artz in the seventh, threw two scoreless frames and allowed one hit while striking out one and walking one.

For the third consecutive game, the Legends turned at least two double-plays and now have nine twin-killings in the three games.

The final game of this four-game block is set for Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston sending righty Jairo Heredia (4-2, 2.66 ERA) to the hill while Lexington is expected to counter with righty Jake Leonhardt (3-7, 5.06 ERA).
