Grand Rapids Drive News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Drive (6-2) used a big third quarter to pull away from Ft. Wayne (0-6) Friday night at DeltaPlex Arena. Drive guard Devon Baulkman closed out the third by getting fouled while hitting a buzzer beater three, making it a four-point play after the free throw. That all but sealed the victory for Grand Rapids as the Drive continued to push their advantage into the fourth, leading by as much as 33 during the second half.
It was a back-and-forth game throughout the first 24 minutes as the lead changed a total of six times and the score tied eight times, but the Drive were able to pull away due to their ability to crash the boards on both ends, out-rebounding the Mad Ants 28-19, in addition to shooting 51% from the field.
The Drive's success is attributed to contributions from a number of players Friday night. Pistons rookie Sekou Doumbouya continued to gain momentum of assignment with GR, racking up a game-high 23 points on 9-15 shooting, along with 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Jordan Bone tallied a solid 17 points, shooting 6-9 from the field, to go along with 3 rebounds. Other Drive starters in double digits were Louis King with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals and Donta Hall with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Todd Withers was hot off the bench tonight, scoring 13 points to go with his 8 rebounds.
The Mad Ants had help from across the roster, but Travin Thibodeaux led the team, while nearly missing a double-double, with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Other Mad Ants in double digits were Ike Nwamu (17 points, 4 rebounds and, 3 assists), Jovan Mooring (13 points), Stephan Hicks (12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks), C.J Wilcox (12 points and 2 steals) and Walt Lemon Jr. (10 points, 3 assists and 2 steals).
The Drive will get the rest of the weekend off and will stay in Grand Rapids to host the Erie BayHawks on Monday with the hopes to maintain their winning streak. The Mad Ants will head to Windy City to face off with the Bulls on Sunday afternoon.
