Greenville Drive News Release
The Greenville Drive (20-24, 56-54) were blanked for the fifth time this season, mustering up just five hits on the night and falling victim to a dominating pitching performance from Winston-Salem Dash (16-26, 50-55) starter Connor McCullough as they fell 6-0.
McCullough settled into a groove early against the Drive retiring the first 10 batters of the game in succession, including four strikeouts, before Mikey Romero notched his first hit as a member of the Drive in the top of the fourth. McCullough ultimately went seven innings for the Dash, allowing just three knocks while fanning six across the 23 batters he faced - just two over the minimum.
The Drive seemingly had no answer for McCullough as they never picked up consecutive hits in the game. Allan Castro, Ronald Rosario and Eddinson Paulino were the only other Drive players to record a hit on the night, with Paulino recording two hits. The Drive ultimately were 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position while leaving four on base.
But while McCullough dominated, the Dash found their stride at the plate, picking up nine hits while using a two-run second inning and four-run fifth inning to down the Drive.
The Dash broke through on two sacrifice-flies in the second inning, one from Loidel Chapelli and the other from Taishi Nakawake, to take the early 2-0 lead off Drive starter Dalton Rogers. Rogers relinquished just four hits in his 4.1 innings of work with three of the four given up in the first two innings. He'd strike out six on the night before giving way to Drive newcomer, Caleb Bolden.
Bolden's debut for the Drive, however, wouldn't start smoothly as he gave up back-to-back home runs - a three-run shot to DJ Gladney and a solo homer to Michael Turner, to put the Dash up 6-0.
Bolden recovered from there, finishing his night after two innings of work where he fanned three and ultimately gave up five hits before Felix Cepeda tossed the eighth for the Drive. Cepeda would record a strikeout and need just ten pitches in his outing.
The Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox) return to action on Thursday, August 17 at 7:00 p.m. against the Winston-Salem Dash (Chicago White Sox). The Dash hold a 2-0 series lead.
