Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive's playoff hopes are on life support due to a 2-0 shutout Saturday night at the hands of the Lake County Captains. The Drive managed just four hits versus four Captains pitchers and watched their second half record drop to 23-19. Greenville now stands 10 games behind first place Augusta who closed out their four-game series versus Hagerstown with a victory.
The Captains broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with the only runs of the ballgame. Max Ramirez doubled to left center with one out and two batters later scored on P.J. Hiser's single. Josh Noviskey, who had reached base with a walk, advanced to third on the base hit. Niuman Romero then followed with a sacrifice fly to right, knocking in Noviskey.
Dominic Ramos led the Drive with two hits, while Aaron Bates and Christian Lara rounded out the offense with a hit apiece. Southpaw Michael Rozier suffered the loss, dropping his record to 4-5, after allowing two runs on two hits and five walks while striking out three over six innings. Fellow lefthander Tim Cox, who was making his first appearance after a brief stint with the Wilmington Blue Rocks, pitched the final three innings, surrendering two hits and striking out four.
Frank Herrmann earned his third win for the Captains, tossing five shutout innings, allowing a hit and three walks while striking out six. Lake County then got two scoreless frames from Doodle Hicks, and one apiece from Jason Schutt and Matt Davis. Davis picked up his league leading 24th save of 2006.
The Drive begin a four-game showdown with the Hagerstown Suns tomorrow evening at West End Field. First pitch is set for 5:05 PM. Southpaw Ryan Phillips will take the hill for Greenville and Hagerstown will counter with right-hander Deolis Guerra.
