Lancaster Stormers News Release
Johnny Drennen launched a leadoff home run in the top of the tenth inning to provide the Somerset Patriots with a 3-2 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the victory, the Patriots took two of three in the series.
Drennen's homer off Mike Johnston (1-1) mirrored one he hit in the ninth inning on Wednesday off another left-hander, Tim Hamulack. Both were deposited on the bank just to the right of the batter's eye. Johnston retired the side in order afterward, but the Barnstormers could only muster a two-out single by Emerson Frostad in the bottom of the inning off Josh Rupe (1-0).
Somerset grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third. Yusuf Carter led off with a single and stole second. With one out, Rex Rundgren lined a single to left. Carter was held at third by Travis Anderson but raced home when the ball escaped Blake Gailen in left field.
Carter and Rundgren combined to produce the second Somerset run in the fifth. The Somerset catcher doubled off the third base bag to lead off, worked his way to third on a sacrifice by Drennen and scored when Rundgren lofted a deep fly to center.
Lancaster was stymied by starter Justin Cassel on just two singles over seven innings. The right-hander faced the minimum of 18 batters for the first six and easily survived a leadoff single to center by Adam Godwin in the seventh.
The Barnstormers rallied in the eighth. Brad Boyer connected for his first homer of the year off reliever Anthony Claggett with one out. Fehlandt Lentini was awarded a single when his one hop smash was juggled by Rundgren. David Quinowski entered from the bullpen and struck out Jaime Pedroza for the second out. Frostad drew a walk, adding a second runner, and Rupe was ushered into the game.
Godwin beat out a topper up the third base line to load the bases. With Gailen at the plate, Rupe skipped a pitch past Carter's grasp, allowing Godwin to score the tying run.
The Sugar Land Skeeters will make their first ever visit to Clipper Magazine Stadium beginning Friday night at 7:00. Lancaster will send right-hander Alan Johnson (0-1) to the mound. He will match up against another former big leaguer, Pedro Liriano (0-0). The game will be aired on WLAN, 1390-AM and 1390wlan.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45
NOTES: The Barnstormers have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season...It was Lancaster's first extra base hit of the year...Godwin continued his torrid pace with two more hits...He is 11-for-20 in the last five games...Lancaster is 1-2 in one-run games on the season.
