Dragons to Celebrate Home Run for Life on Wednesday

DAYTON, OH -- Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the Dayton Dragons will host eight-year-old Nickolaus (Nick) Braun during the unique "Home Run for Life" program on Wednesday, July 27, at 7 pm when the Dayton Dragons take on the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Field.

The Anthem Home Run for Life program provides children in the Dayton Region a once-in-a-lifetime experience as they battle serious medical conditions. Each honoree gets to take a symbolic home run lap around the bases of Fifth Third Field during a sold-out Dragons home game while the crowd provides a standing ovation.

NICK'S STORY

In his free time, eight-year-old Nick Braun likes to score goals. He is a forward for the Saint Peter Catholic Elementary soccer team and has been playing since kindergarten. Soccer hasn't always been so easy for Nick, though.

In the fall of 2009, Nick started getting winded during games and repeatedly had to take himself out of games. He also developed a respiratory infection that caused him to wheeze and have difficulty breathing even when he wasn't playing a sport.

Concerned by these developments, Nick's parents, Tim and Karen, took him to the doctor several times with the same symptoms. By the fourth visit, Nick was tested and diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma.

Dr. Mueller at Dayton Children's Medical Center explained to Nick that he would have to use an inhaler before playing sports and whenever he cam down with a respiratory infection. But Nick wouldn't stop that from striving to reach his goals. Since starting on the inhaler, both Nick and his mother have noticed and improvement on and off the soccer field. He is really excited for the upcoming season.

"I'm going to try to score a lot of goals. I think our team will be pretty good this year," Nick said.

On Wednesday night, Nick will be joined at Fifth Third Field by his parents, Tim and Karen Braun, and his medical team from Dayton Children's Medical Center.

During an inning break, Nick will take a ceremonial lap around the bases, which will signify his "Home Run for Life". When he rounds third base, the Dragons players will be lined up to greet him as he makes his way towards the plate. As Nick crosses home, Dragons manager Delino DeShields will present him with a certificate making him an honorary Dayton Dragon.
