South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - For the second game in a row, the South Bend Silver Hawks found themselves trailing by a sizeable deficit early. For the second time in a row, a late comeback came up two runs short - this time in a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Kane County Cougars on Monday night.
Cougars starter Greg Billo (WP, 8-2) was simply dominant from the start. Entering play with a 1.41 ERA, Billo threw five no-hit innings and seven scoreless innings as Kane County built a 4-0 lead. However, Billo would run out of steam late and the Silver Hawks made the game interesting with some late runs.
With one out in the eighth, South Bend broke through against Billo with a solo home run to left field by Matt Helm. The blast was Helm's sixth of the year and it brought the Silver Hawks to within three. Roberto Ortiz followed with a single and Gerson Montilla added a RBI double to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Billo got Chris Jarrett to fly out and then reliever Allen Caldwell (SV, 1) induced a groundout from Ender Inciarte to end the inning.
South Bend threatened again in the ninth inning with two singles and a wild pitch putting runners at second and third with only one out, but Caldwell struck out both Raywilly Gomez and Helm to end the game.
Silver Hawks starter Mike Bolsinger (LP, 3-5) did not pitch poorly, but allowed four runs over six innings with seven strikeouts. Cheslor Cuthbert had a RBI single in the second, and then Brett Eibner picked up a RBI when Niko Gallego booted a potential inning-ending double play ball to make it 2-0 in the third.
Geulin Beltre put the lead to four when he hit an opposite field homer in the top of the fifth. It was the seventh straight game that the Silver Hawks have given up a home run and the 13th homer allowed in that stretch.
After an off day Tuesday, the Silver Hawks head out on the road Wednesday to Midland, Michigan to battle the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers). Game time is at 7:05 PM Eastern Time with RHP Jeff Shields (6-9, 5.08 ERA) going up against RHP Garrett Gould (10-4, 2.29 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
