Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Dayton Dragons pitcher Amir Garrett fired a three-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader and the Dragons came from behind to defeat the Bowling Green Hot Rods in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons won the first game 4-0 and captured the second game 4-3 before a crowd of 8,492.

Garret tossed the first complete game shutout for a Dayton pitcher since 2008 as he threw just 68 pitches over a seven-inning game, and all but 13 were strikes. He allowed only three base runners, giving up three singles (two were infield hits) with no walks and five strikeouts. Bowling Green did not advance a runner past first base in the game.

Jon Matthews, Phillip Ervin, and Tanner Rahier each had two hits as part of a nine-hit Dragons attack in game one.

The last complete game shutout thrown by a Dragons pitcher was a nine-inning shutout by Enerio Del Rosario on August 28, 2008 at Lansing. Garrett has allowed no runs in two of his last three starts. In the other start, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing runs in the sixth.

In the second game, the Dragons trailed 3-1 after four innings but started back in the fifth. Singles in the inning by Avain Rachal and Carlton Daal along with a Bowling Green error set up an RBI ground out by Matthews to make it 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning of the scheduled seven-inning game, Dayton's Daniel Pigott led off with a single to center field and Ervin followed with a bloop hit to right. The runners advanced to second and third on a throwing error after Ervin's hit. Tanner Rahier's infield ground out drove in Pigott to tie the game, and Ervin scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Dragons a 4-3 lead.

The Hot Rods got three consecutive one-out singles in the seventh to load the bases. But Dragons reliever Alejandro Chacin got Alexander Simon to hit into a game-ending double play as the Dragons completed the sweep.

Rahier and Carlton Daal each had two hits in the second game.

The Dragons (34-30) kept their slim playoff hopes alive with the win, pending the outcome of the West Michigan-Great Lakes game. South Bend won on Wednesday to clinch one of the two East Division first half playoff spots. West Michigan would clinch the other with one win or one Dayton loss. The Dragons have four games to play.

The Dragons host Bowling Green on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons are undecided on their starting pitcher. Bowling Green's Jake Faria (3-3, 3.66) will provide the opposition.

Thursday's game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Cable channels 23 and 372.). Baseball writer Hal McCoy, a member of the National Baseball Hall-of-Fame, will serve as guest commentator. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.

Notes: Dragons all-star pitcher Nick Travieso was assigned to the Billings roster before the game and Nick Routt was placed on the disabled list. Pitchers Franderlyn Romero and Luke Moran were promoted to Dayton from extended spring training. Romero started the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader and worked five innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) with no walks and three strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision.
