Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Dayton, Ohio - With the rain finally out of the area, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) and Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds) were finally able to play, but unfortunately the Dragons swept a doubleheader of seven inning games from the Hot Rods on Wednesday evening. Dayton won game one, 4-0, and they rallied to win game two, 4-3.
In game one the Dragons received a great starting performance from Amir Garrett (2-4). He tossed the first complete-game shutout for Dayton since 2008, and held the Hot Rods to just three hits over seven innings. He struck out five, and did not allow a runner to reach second base.
Garrett's offense gave him all he needed in the first inning. Sammy Diaz singled to left-center field with one out and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Phil Ervin then hit a dribbler up the third-base line, and Ty Young's throw to first base went wide of the bag, and it allowed Diaz to score.
Tanner Rahier scored on a fielder's choice in the second to extend the lead, and the Dragons stretched it further in the third inning. Ervin doubled to lead-off, and one out later, Daniel Pigott was hit by a pitch. One out later, Jon Matthews singled to right field. The throw from Yoel Araujo went high at home plate, and Ervin was able to score. Pigott moved up to third base on the play, and he would score when Joe Hudson recorded a base hit.
German Marquez (2-4) took the loss in game one as he allowed four runs, but just two earned.
Game two started similar to the first as Dayton put a run on the board in the lid-lifting frame. Matthews started with an infield single, but he moved to third base on a throwing error by Bowling Green starter Ben Griset. Diaz then grounded out to advance Matthews home.
The Hot Rods would score their first run of the day in the second to level the game. With one out, Armando Araiza reached on an infield single. A passed ball moved Araiza up to second base, and Juniel Querecuto followed with a hit into the right-field corner. It scored Araiza, and evened the score at one.
Bowling Green went in front in the fourth. Johnny Field blooped a single into right field, and Granden Goetzman lined a home run over the left-center field fence to give the Hot Rods a 3-1 advantage. The home run was Goetzman's sixth of the season as he drove upped his runs batted in total to 29.
Dayton cut the lead to just one in the fifth when another throwing error allowed Rachal to reach third base after a single. He scored on a groundout by Matthews.
The sixth inning spelt the end of the Bowling Green lead as Dayton scored two runs. Pigott led off with a single, and Ervin followed with a hit of his own to right field. Araujo's throw was intended for third, but it went up the left-field line and it allowed the runners to reach second and third base safely. Rahier grounded out to tie the game, and a wild pitch plated Ervin to give the Dragons the 4-3 lead.
Three singles by the Hot Rods loaded the bases in the ninth, but Alexander Simon grounded into a double play to end game two.
Scott Brattvet (3-4) tossed a scoreless sixth inning to earn the game two victory. Alejandro Chacin averted trouble in the ninth inning to record his fifth save of the season.
Ben Griset (0-2) allowed just one earned run in five innings, but three unearned runs also crossed and he picked up the loss. Griset did not walk a batter and he struck out three.
The Hot Rods will try and salvage the finale with Dayton on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT, and the fans can follow the action on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket beginning with the Pepsi Pre-Game Show at 5:45 p.m. CT.
