Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Parker Dalton drilled a home run, double, and single and drove in three runs to lead the Great Lakes Loons to a 9-6 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Thursday night. The Dragons' loss snapped their three game winning streak and dropped them back into a tie for first place with West Michigan in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League. The Dragons are 18-13 on the season.
Great Lakes scored single runs in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead before the Dragons scored three times in the third. Keltavious Jones led off the inning with a solo home run, his third of the season, to make it 2-1. Brandon Waring singled with one out and Logan Parker followed with a home run to right in just his second at bat of the season to give Dayton a 3-2 lead.
Great Lakes regained the lead in the fourth when Dalton blasted a two-run home run off Dragons starter Matt Klinker to make it 4-3.
The Dragons answered with two runs in the fifth. Denis Phipps lined a single to left to start the inning and with one out, Parker singled to right to advance Phipps to third. Devin Mesoraco followed with a sharp single to right to drive in Phipps and move Parker to third. Michael McKennon delivered a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Parker and give Dayton a 5-4 lead.
Great Lakes took the lead right back in the sixth. Reliever Philippe Valiquette allowed a one out single to Dalton before Erik Kanaby reached on an infield hit. Jovanny Rosario reached on an error by second baseman Kevyn Feiner to load the bases. Jeff Jeffords replaced Valiquette and uncorked a wild pitch to bring in the tying run, and Alfredo Silverio followed with a sacrifice fly to give Great Lakes a 6-5 lead. The Loons added three more in the eighth to lead 9-5.
Justin Reed drilled a home run in the bottom of the eighth to pull the Dragons within three at 9-6, and after singles by Jones, Zack Cozart, and Phipps, the Dragons had the tying run on base with one out. But Great Lakes reliever Miguel Ramirez came out of the bullpen to strike out Waring and retire Parker on a foul pop to retire the side. Ramirez pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.
The Dragons finished with 13 base hits including two apiece by Jones, Cozart, Phipps, Waring, and Parker.
The Dragons host Great Lakes again on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Right-hander Luis Montano (4-1, 1.69) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes right-hander Kyle Smit (0-2, 6.00).
Notes: Denis Phipps extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games, the longest hitting streak of the season for a Dayton player...The Dragons stranded 13 runners to match a season high.
