
Doyle Leads Stingrays Past Gladiators in Overtime

North Charleston, SC - Rookie forward Chris Doyle buried the game-winning goal in overtime to give the South Carolina Stingrays (15-11-1-1) a 4-3 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators (13-8-6-3) on Ft. Jackson Holdover Troop Appreciation Night presented by Verizon Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Stingrays forward and team captain Matt Scherer kicked off the scoring with his first goal of the season at 4:12 of the opening period lifting a shot over the glove of Gladiators goaltender Marc Cheverie (L, 27 saves on 31 shots) from the bottom of the left-wing circle. Defenseman Nick Tabisz and forward Danick Paquette earned assists. The Gladiators responded with a tally from forward Bryan Brutlag at 12:48 from forwards Chris Clackson and Tyler Murovic.
Forward Igor Gongalsky gave the Gladiators a 2-1 lead 20 seconds into the second period tapping in a pass from forward Nikita Kashirsky under the pads of Stingrays netminder Daren Machesney (W, 34 saves on 37 shots). Forward Andy Brandt added the second assist.
Forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien made it 2-2 with a power-play goal at 3:38 of the final frame from Stingrays forwards Doyle and David de Kastrozza. Tabisz reclaimed the lead for the Stingrays at 13:47 banking a shot off the back of the right leg of Cheverie from the left-wing corner. Forwards Sean Dolan and Trent Campbell grabbed assists. The Gladiators sent the contest into overtime with a marker from Clackson at 17:17 from forwards Justin Milo and Murovich.
In the extra session, Doyle lit the lamp on the power play blasting a shot past the stick of Cheverie from the right-wing circle. Tabisz and de Kastrozza netted assists on Doyle's first goal of the season. The Stingrays ended the contest 2-for-4 on the power play while the Gladiators went 0-for-4.
The Stingrays hit the road for a three-game in three-night road trip starting Monday, December 26 against the Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. The Rays return to the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday, December 31 against the Florida Everblades for FIRST Robotics Night presented by Google and a New Year's Eve bash with a postgame balloon drop at 6:05 p.m.
