NORFOLK, Va. -- Catcher Ryan Doumit blasted a grand slam in a five-run top of the seventh as Indianapolis rallied for a 7-5 victory over Norfolk Tuesday evening at Harbor Park. The Indians improve to 7-3 with the win, while the Tides fall to 3-6 on the season.
Doumit, who also lifted a sacrifice fly to plate LF Rajai Davis in the fourth, finished 1-for-3 with one run and five RBI. The 26-year-old is hitting .429 with two long balls, eight runs and nine RBI in eight contests after being optioned to Indianapolis on April 8.
Doumit's biggest hit of the year came after Indianapolis knotted the contest with two singles and a pair of walks. 1B Yurendell de Caster and 2B Luis Ordaz recorded base knocks in the frame, while DH Michael Ryan and CF Nyjer Morgan drew bases on balls. Morgan's free pass forced home de Caster. Ordaz, Ryan and Morgan then trotted home on the Tribe's first grand slam since Aug. 28, 2006.
Indians RHP Dan Kolb (1.0 IP, 2 BB, 1 SO) tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season after the Tides pushed across one run in the seventh and one in the eighth. RHP Jesse Chavez (1.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) was charged with a blown save, but ended up notching the win in his first decison of 2007.
Neither starting pitcher -- Indianapolis RHP Marty McLeary (5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) or Norfolk RHP Tim Kester (5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) -- figured in the decision.
The teams traded runs in the fourth. Indianapolis scored again in the sixth, but Norfolk answered the call with a two spot in their next at-bat.
Tides RHP Andy Mitchell (1.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) gave up the grand slam and fell to 1-1 with the loss. Indianapolis needed just five hits to win the affair as the Norfolk hurlers walked nine on the night.
SS Eider Torres managed three hits for the home team, while C J.R. House and 1B Mike Cervenak registered two base knocks apiece. DH Terry Tiffee was Norfolk's top run producer with three RBI.
Morgan, a Triple-A rookie who collected three walks and two runs, raised his on-base percentage to .429.
The two teams return to Harbor Park on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m., for game three of the series. LHP Sean Burnett is expected to take the hill for Indianapolis, while LHP Garrett Olson is scheduled to start for Norfolk.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m.
