Johnson City Doughboys News Release
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - A late game surge would secure the third consecutive win for the Doughboys, 8-1 over Pulaski.
Early runs would once again be the name of the game for Johnson City, as yesterday's hero Logan Sutter would drive in a pair to give Johnson City a 2-0 lead.
Pulaski would strike back to start the second, with a triple scoring a run, putting the tying run on third. The runner would be stranded on third as Doughboys' starter Connor Foley would work out of the jam, inducing a double play.
Base runners would come at a premium in the middle innings, with just four total baserunners reaching base between the two teams from the bottom of the second through the fifth.
The sixth looked to be a launching pad for the Doughboys, and Colby Backus used it as such, sending his third home run of the summer over the left field wall, tying him for the league lead with Logan Sutter.
The one was all Johnson City would get in the sixth, but the runs would continue in the seventh, as Johnson City would string together hits, and Caleb Berry would bring a pair home, making it, 5-1 Johnson City.
The Doughboys would pile it on even more in the inning, with Caleb Marmo bringing in a run with a ground out, followed by another Logan Sutter double, sending it to a, 7-1 Doughboys lead.
The double by Sutter, his second, moved him to 6-for-10 in the last two days, with a pair of home runs, a trio of doubles and 10 RBI.
The Doughboys bullpen would control the game, with Ty Cobb and Cole Fehrman combining for five innings of shutout baseball, only allowing two hits in the five innings.
Johnson City would add on an extra in the eighth, taking advantage of a Pulaski error, as Andrew Neil would drive in Cam King, making it 8-1.
That's all the Doughboys would need on Thursday, with Fehrman closing out the ninth, leaving a runner on first, sending the 3,917 fans home happy.
The win was the third in a row for the Doughboys, moving them into sole possession of first place in the Appalachian League West.
Johnson City will look for a sweep of Pulaski tomorrow at 7 p.m. on princess night at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.
