Doughboys Give up Late Runs, Lose 9-8
June 25, 2021 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Johnson City Doughboys News Release
Johnson City seemed primed for a big home win on Friday night, but two runs in the top of the ninth inning for Burlington gave the visiting Sock Puppets a 9-8 win.
The Doughboys (7-11-1) had grabbed an 8-7 lead in the eighth inning on a Joe Vetrano three-run homer, shifting the momentum squarely into the Johnson City dugout. The homer was Vetrano's third in the last four games, and his second of the series against Burlington (7-11-1).
However, the Sock Puppets put up two runs in the final inning to jump in front, and then held on for dear life to secure the win. Trailing by a run, Johnson City loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth with Vetrano due up. However, Burlington pitcher Chase Johnson induced a groundout to end the game.
It's the second night in a row that Johnson City has entered the ninth inning with a lead, only to come away without a win.
Cade Sumbler had his best game as a Doughboy, going 4-for-4 at the plate with a walk and throwing out a pair of would-be base stealers from his perch behind the dish. Sumbler's college teammate at Oklahoma State, Jaxson Crull, also had a big night, collecting three hits to go along with his league-leading 21st RBI. Vetrano finished 2-for-4 with the homer and four total runs batted in.
On the mound, Ethan Courtney tossed two scoreless innings for Johnson City.
The Doughboys will be kicking themselves over missed chances, as they tallied eleven hits and ten walks, but hit just .143 with runners in scoring position on Friday.
Johnson City now welcomes Kingsport to town for a two-game series starting on Saturday. The game at TVA Credit Union Ballpark will be part of Sound Off Saturday, presented by Campbell's Morrell Music. A concert from featured musical guest Lynnae Moon will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the game against the Axmen kicking off at 7:00 p.m. A fireworks extravaganza will follow the action.
