Late Rally for Greeneville Falls Short at Home against Bluefield, 6-4

GREENEVILLE - Despite hitting a pair of home runs and taking an early lead at home, the Greeneville Flyboys dropped a 6-4 decision against visiting Bluefield on Thursday at Pioneer Park.

Greeneville (11-7) saw its bats go quiet against Ridge Runners pitching as the Flyboys scattered seven hits but scored in just three innings on the night. Jonathan Hogart and Emanuel Dean paced Greeneville with two-hit efforts at the plate. Hogart and Dean also hit their first home runs this season for the Flyboys.

Luke Russo would get his third start of the season for Greeneville and worked out of trouble in the top of the first inning to keep the Ridge Runners off the scoreboard. Hogart would help his starting pitcher in the bottom of the inning as he sent a two-strike offering over the wall in left field to give the Flyboys a 1-0 advantage.

Bluefield delivered a long ball of its own in the top of the second inning as Joshuan Sandoval sent an offering from Russo over the wall in left field with a runner on base to give the Ridge Runners a 2-1 lead. Bluefield added to its lead in the top of the third inning with a run-scoring double to make it 3-1.

Greeneville cut the deficit to 3-2 as Daylen Reyes notched a two-out run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth inning that allowed Dean to score from second. The Flyboys would be unable to knot the score as Bluefield gained a 4-2 advantage with a run in the fifth inning.

The Ridge Runners tallied a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a commanding 6-2 lead against Greeneville. Dean kept Greeneville in the contest with his first home run for the Flyboys as his two-run blast trimmed the gap to 6-4. The Flyboys would go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth as Bluefield closed the door to secure the victory in the first game of the series.

Russo suffered his first loss of the season on the mound for Greeneville after allowing three runs to score off three hits through 2.2 innings of work. Despite allowing a run to score, Austin Troesser fanned six Bluefield batters through 2.1 innings of relief. Mason Turner and Cal Lambert worked scoreless outings out of the bullpen for Greeneville.

The Flyboys host Bluefield again on Friday night at Pioneer Park as it will be First Responders and Front-line Workers Night at the Ballpark. First responders and front-line workers that present a valid ID card at the box office will receive one free ticket to the game.
