Johnson City Doughboys News Release

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Runs would come early, but not often, as Johnson City would sweep the homestand, winning its fifth straight, 4-3 over Kingsport.

For the second day in a row, the Doughboys would be unable to score first, with a Corbin Shaw double driving in a pair of Axmen, making it 2-0 before the Doughboys bats even got to the plate.

The Doughboys wouldn't let the deficit sit for long, with Logan Sutter moving into sole possession of the league lead in RBI with a single, closing the deficit down to just one.

Joel Pineiro would settle in after the two run first, allowing just three base runners in his last four innings on the mound for Johnson City.

The Doughboys would take their first lead of the day in the second, as Amman Dewberry would send a ball 396 feet into left center, his second homer of the season, making it 3-2.

The lead would quickly get extended further in the third, with Braden Spano bringing in a run to push the lead to two at 4-2.

The middle innings would be uneventful for both teams, with both teams failing to put a runner past second.

Kingsport would show some life in the sixth, with Deniel Ortiz sending a ball over the right field wall to shorten the Doughboys lead to just one.

As it has been this week, the Doughboys bullpen stepped up big time, only allowing the one run on three hits in four innings of work following Pineiro leaving the game.

Offensively, Johnson City wouldn't do much past the third. The seventh would bring the closest threat, as the Doughboys would load the bases, but leave them all stranded without a run across.

Christian Toledo would come in to save the game in the ninth for the Doughboys, and it wouldn't come without drama.

Kingsport would put a runner on first with one out in the ninth, with Logen Sutten sending a double to right center, trying to score the run all the way from first.

The Doughboys wouldn't allow that to happen, with a perfect relay in from the outfield, as catcher Caleb Berry would put down the tag, upholding the Doughboys' lead.

That drama would be enough to juice up Christian Toledo, and the 3,900+ fans in TVA Credit Union Ballpark to strike out the final hitter, ending the game in favor of the Doughboys.

The 4-3 win, the fifth win in a row for the Doughboys, the longest win streak in the Appalachian League this season.

The Doughboys finish the homestand 5-0, looking to go undefeated on the week tomorrow at Kingsport.
