Doubling Down on the Food Bank
February 1, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - This weekend, the Waterloo Black Hawks' John Deere-themed jerseys will be auctioned to benefit the Northeast Iowa Food Bank after Saturday's game; fans can also help the Food Bank during the month of February through the $16.50 Campaign, presented by Slumberland Furniture, KCNZ "The Fan," and the Black Hawks.
Each month during hockey season, a different charity in the Cedar Valley is highlighted as part of Waterloo's home games and within The Fan's broadcast day on 1650 AM and 102.3 FM. Hawks faithful and 1650 listeners are encouraged to learn more about the cause and consider a donation in the suggested amount of $16.50. While that modest amount might seem to only have limited impact, the total amount can grow quickly when many people choose to contribute.
"No one should have to make the choice between food and other essentials like prescriptions, medical care, rent, or heat. Unfortunately, the reality is that we have neighbors who are forced into those types of choices every day," said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene. "The Northeast Iowa Food Bank is an important part of the safety net for thousands of people. With our partners at John Deere, Slumberland and The Fan, we are proud to highlight work done by the Food Bank."
The Northeast Iowa Food Bank serves approximately one-sixth of Iowa's counties and is part of the Feeding America network. Like other Feeding America affiliates, NEIFB works with a wide spectrum of partners to identify specific areas of need and create solutions to food insecurity. An example is the Food Bank's BackPacks program, which provides chronically hungry children with non-perishable, nutritious, kid-friendly, shelf-stable food to sustain them over weekends and school holidays. By working with food production and food retail partners, NEIFB also saves millions of pounds of food which would otherwise be wasted, efficiently diverting those products to food pantries and community organizations throughout its service area.
