Madison Capitols News Release

This week's alumni update focuses on former Capitols defenseman Luke Mittelstadt. The Eden Prairie, Minnesota, native was a big part of the Caps run to the 2021-22 Eastern Conference Championship and the team's first appearance in the Clark Cup Final. He now laces his skates up for the top ranked University of Minnesota.

Mittelstadt played his pre-junior career with his hometown high school, Eden Prairie HS. Over a span of three seasons with Eden Prairie, he recorded 102 points over 86 career games. This included runs to the state tournament in all three years of his high school career. His team made it to the championship in all three seasons and fell in during his sophomore and junior seasons, but during his senior season, he was able to help his school find their third state championship in overtime.

Following his high school season that year, he joined the Lincoln Stars, acquired via the dispersal draft, for the remainder of the 2020-21 season. He recorded three points in twelve games with the Stars. After his campaign with Lincoln was finished, his attention turned to Madison who drafted him second overall in the 2019 USHL Phase I Draft.

Although his time in Madison was short, only one season, Mittelstadt made his impact felt in 2021-22. In sixty games, he registered 55 points, which ranked third among defensemen in the league. His 55 points included 19 goals, also third in the league among defensemen, which thirteen of his goals came on the power play, also third among defensemen. His efforts earned him the Capitols franchise first ever nod as All-USHL First Team. His individual awards were great, but his part in the 2021-22 team was much more than being named as one of the top players in the league. He played a very important part of the Caps run to the Clark Cup Final.

Since his time with the Capitols, Mittelstadt has made his way up 94 to Minneapolis where he currently plays with the University of Minnesota. In 26 games with the Golden Gophers, who are ranked number one in the country currently, Mittelstadt has recorded fourteen points. His play with Minnesota earned him a spot on the 2023 US World Junior Championship roster in Canada. Although the US was unable to take home gold, Mittelstadt still returned to the US with a bronze medal. He recorded three assists in the tournament.

Mittelstadt is ranked 82nd among North American skaters in the mid-term rankings ahead of the 2023 NHL Draft, which is set to take place in Nashville this summer.
